Tom Wilson was right…

Each morning at six o’clock a nasty sound tells me to get up and get ready for work.

After my usual morning rituals in the bathroom, having my first cigarette (I know, I know ..it is bad for your health); I head out to the bus stop to get to my work.

It’s a 30 minute's drive, time I spend reading a book.

A daily routine I have for many years…

Last Thursday something happened on the bus…

Halfway through the trip, the bus had another stop and picked up a mother with two young children, one on her right hand the other in the stroller she was trying to push on the bus.

An unsuccessful action, I might add, which made me look up from my book.

The daughter that was first on the hand (who I assume was maybe 6 or 7 years old) came to the rescue helping her mother get the stroller on the bus.

She saw me watching and gave me a smile.

I could not return the smile because I had to wear a face mask because of the pandemic we all are living in, so gave her a thumbs up, which in return gave me a bonus smile from the little girl.

I can tell you, that moment and the rest of the day gave me a feeling as if the world was a little better.

Tom was right when he said, “A smile is happiness you’ll find right under your nose.”

Science of smiling

According to science, smiling activates the release of neuropeptides that work toward fighting off stress.

Neuropeptides are tiny molecules that allow neurons to communicate. They facilitate messaging to the entire body when we are happy, sad, angry, depressed, or excited.

The feel-good neurotransmitters — dopamine, endorphins, and serotonin — are all released when a smile flashes across your face as well.

This not only relaxes your body, but it can also lower your heart rate and blood pressure.

(Seaward BL. Managing Stress: Principles and Strategies for Health and Well-Being. Sudbury, Mass.: Jones and Bartlett; 2009:258.)

Not all smiles are happy ones

There are 19 types of smiles…

Unfortunately, not all smiles come from happiness, there are also smiles out of when we’re in pain, embarrassed, uncomfortable, horrified or even miserable. A smile may mean contempt, anger or disbelief, that we’re lying or that we’ve lost.
The only smile I care about it is the one that is genuine and makes others smiles back.
If we would smile more often to one another, it would make the world a better place.

You look so much better when you smile, so smile

Before you leave, slap a nice, genuine smile on that face of yours.

Not a “LOL” or smiley from your cellphone.

You’ll thank me later.

Last but not least, stay yourself.

Till next song (that matters to you),
